Johh,

I agree with you. Restrictions, one way or the other, are restrictions on freedom. Banning the burqua is like banning rosaries for Catholics. It's sad to see that so many people are willing to force others to view things as they do. It's one thing to be forced to wear the burqua, but if it's part of their religion and they aren't forced to wear it by anyone but themselves, why is it such a terrible thing?

Not everyone wants to be exactly like everyone else. And forcing these women to remove their burqua is akin to forcing any woman with a skirt to her ankles to hem it to her knee.

Guys, I think the news that France is considering banning the burqua has prompted this slew of new comments... actually I think this is fairly simple: if you ban it OR you make it mandatory, you reduce freedom. Surely the goal of banning it would be to increase freedom? So it's counterproductive. We may not like some of the things people DO with freedom, but if they're truly free, then we support them.

Are muslim women so terribly ugly that their husbands and fathers are ashamed for them to be seen in public? Or are muslim men so very insecure, that they are afraid if their beautiful wifes see their own beauty in the eyes of other men, that they will no longer put up with their ugly husbands? The burqa makes these women non-persons, and should not be tolerated in the "civilized" Western world. It's time for the Muslim world to take the leap from the Middle Ages to the 21st century.

What ever they want to wear wear it but don't come to america and think your not going to be looked at funny. I think it was something men being men made up a long time ago because they don't want to have to control their sexual frustrations so out of sight out of mind and cover it up like it was something nasty. If a man can feel like he is better than something else he'll do it
Them men in Iraq think women are no better than a stray dog anyway. Keep em in the dark a bout everything and who are they to know what they can do and what they can't

A woman's "choice" is overestimated when she is oppressed by a patriarchal religion. Your suggesting her choice is like going inside a store to buy a preferred outfit. That woman has a choice in strict terms of "what to wear". One can only judge a woman's motive to wear an debasing garment if she herself has created it, the concept of it, its function, etc.

Ref: Burqa-freedom to wear what you want.
Ahem. I happen to be a nudist. I dont' get to run around nude outside my territory; because? -- I dunno. Not even on the beach. If personal freedom was the issue, then I could do what I want to do, right? The real issue of the burqa should/could be; wearing something that allows one to obscure one's identity-- or, is that really the issue? What IS the real issue, here?

I don't think anyone should be making anyone else's decision about what to wear, ever. Sure, I think burquas are oppressive to women like most westerners do. But if a woman WANTS to wear a burqua, that should be her choice. Why not think about banning bikinis instead? I think seeing every woman as a sex symbol is just as bad.
