You know things are bad when the presidential campaign is put on hold so that the senators running for the White House can “deal” with the “historic” crisis facing the US economy. One problem is that nobody really knows what the hell is going on, although Bill Clinton articulated the general drift of it quite well on Letterman the other night, a show that John McCain has just pulled out of appearing on tonight.

When average people read a headline about Wall Street and the federal reserve and Fannie and Freddie and the stock market and sub prime mortgages and bailouts and other economic bullshit, I’m not sure they understand even as much as I do, which isn’t a lot. All I know is that we’re in some hot water, economically, that suddenly nobody has any money, nobody’s buying anything, and people are frightened out of their wits. Not a pretty picture: I hope we actually have some economically sensible leadership in Washington after all, cause we’re going to need it.

UPDATE: It seems that Obama doesn’t agree with McCain and wishes to continue the campaign and the debate on Friday, saying, “It’s my belief that this is exactly the time when the American people need to hear from the person who in approximately 40 days will be responsible for dealing with this mess.” Read: McCain gambled, and Obama didn’t bite. Ouch.

First he says the economy is strong. then he says we are in financial dire straits … he needs to start taking the medicine again.

And I don’t think his suspending his campaign and calling for the debate to be postponed will fool anyone!!!

A little inconsistency with McCain, perhaps?

Hi John. I agree with Justin Webb’s assessment from earlier today. I honestly feel this is just a political stunt, an attempt to show that he is leading on the issue most of the electorate are worried about primarily. Plus I think Obama’s response was on the button- The President needs to be able to handle multiple crisis situations occurring at the same time. Obama has had Biden doing most of his campaigning this week while Obama has been dealing behind the scenes with both his preparations for the debate and with those who are thrashing out a deal in Washington. A miscalculation from McCain I feel!

Yes, it’s a major miscalculation I think, and it didn’t go down well either in Washington (where some other senators are implying that a potential bailout deal didn’t get through because of the distraction of having McCain in Washington) or at the Letterman show which McCain canceled to appear on the CBS News with Katie Couric: watch the gem of a show Letterman did in his absence here. The question now is whether the first of three presidential debates will continue as planned tomorrow. McCain says he’s not coming unless the deal is entirely worked out in Washington; Obama says the debate should go ahead and he plans to attend as scheduled; the media are preparing their schedules as though it’s going ahead; the organizers are continuing to prepare for the debate. Debate or no debate? Wanna bet? (I think I’m leaning toward it happening.)
