Honestly I think you hit the nail on the head and I'm not sure on what grounds he's attempting to justify his traditionalist ideology except an inconsistent approach to rights, as you say, if he doesn't like them or it doesn't help him feel culturally comfortable then he wants to pretend they don't exist.
