Memorial DayThis Monday is Memorial Day, a 3-day weekend which has come to mark the beginning of summer. Its status as a day to remember members of the armed forces killed in action protecting American freedoms isn’t lessened, in my opinion, by the fact that most Americans will use this weekend to go out, let loose and have some fun. The area where I live has an influx today of thousands of visitors in RVs, SUVs and huge pickup trucks towing boats, jetskis, all-terrain vehicles; toys for adults to use here at the lake. They’re packing beer on ice, sunblock, inflatables, kids. They’ve worked hard, and they’re here to play hard. And the rest of America is doing the same this weekend, in a wide variety of ways. Could there be a more fitting memorial to the people who died to preserve these freedoms than the zealous, persistent, passionate use of them?

Happy Memorial Day.

Honestly didn’t know there was such a holiday in the US. Thanks for the info.

John you’re making me jealous. Sun block, cold beer and inflatables? Where do you live?

We’ve just had our bank holiday weekend here in the middle of England and it bloody well rained non-stop. I decided we’d get out of the house on Sunday so we drove to a country pub. I got distracted as we got out of the car and left my lights on. Two hours (and an excellent meal) later I returned to find the car lifeless in the middle of a flooded car park. Happy holidays indeed :-) .

Liam- I live along the Colorado River on the California/Arizona state line. It’s hot…. extremely in the summer. People with ‘water toys’ (jetskis and powerboats) come here to party and vacation and play on the lake, and we get especially busy on Memorial weekend, 4th of July weekend and Labour Day weekend in September. My folks are flying out from Belfast in a couple of weeks; it’s become their holiday spot…. which is handy for me!

Your story about the car sounds like a typical bank holiday Monday in Britain. Call it “happily gloomy”: you’re miserable, but it wouldn’t be British any other way. :-)
