Harlem44- Yup. There are much worse places to live than the UK, and I love the place as it's where I'm from, but that makes me very critical of it too. Ultimately I'd love the UK to move in a more American direction generally: I might even move back if that were the case!

I think I would rather pay $2500 in an emergency than 17.5% sales tax and that much more in gas. Ouch.

John

Have a look at the link below for an explanation of some of the more bizarre aspects of VAT rules in the UK and elsewhere. Might give you a laugh, especially given your stated views on tax.

Liam- Thanks, I didn't know that about food being VAT-exempt. (For American readers, that's Value Added Tax, or sales tax.)

Harlem44- Many agree with you, but I hope this article at least makes you want to ensure that the right changes are made so we don't end up with the problems of the NHS.

All heath systems are awful, you've just got to live with it. But at least universal health will pave the way to being truly inclusive.

I'm glad your wife and son are OK. Small point, you don't pay VAT at the grocery store as virtually all food is exempt from VAT in the UK.
