This is my prediction for 2008; President Rudy Giuliani to take the White House! Today it emerged that former New York City mayor Rudolph Giuliani is planning a run for the presidency in ‘08 and has established the necessary first steps of his bid for Washington.
I like Giuliani. Who doesn’t? He first made headlines for being a damned good lawyer - as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York he beat the crap out of dirty white-collar crooks and achieved a reputation for his tenacity in prosecuting Bad Guys Generally. It wasn’t until 1994 that Giuliani came to the attention of the world in his capacity as Mayor of New York; in his term as mayor his policies of zero tolerance arguably led to a sharp decline in all kinds of crime and, largely, restored social order to a town with a lot of problems. Giuliani then came back into focus on September 11th, 2001 in the last months of his term in office as coordinator of the city’s response and local manager of the disaster in the hours and days that followed. For this he was honoured as TIME magazine’s Person Of The Year 2001.
Hell, the fact that Al Sharpton hates Giuliani is reason enough to admire him. What about his libertarian credentials? It has often been said that a libertarian could be described as a ’social liberal, fiscal conservative.’ This, in many ways, describes Rudy Giuliani.
But let’s be clear about this. Giuliani is not a libertarian’s dream ticket. His policies do not appear to be ideological, let alone libertarian. He is, essentially, a moderate Republican. But let’s consider our alternatives: John McCain, who is also moderate but a hell of a lot less desireable, and Hilary Clinton, who is a walking, talking political misery. McCain would beat Hilary, but Giuliani would beat both. Giuliani is therefore not only the best potential candidate for the presidency in 2008, but he is the most electable candidate too. It appears that he’s been considering the run for the White House for quite some time (check out his website at Solutions America).
So this writer predicts Giuliani to become the 44th President of the United States, and, moreover, believes that he is America’s best option for 2008.

I’d like to see Giuliani hit the White House out of the current crop, but what about Newt Gingrich? He is a real conservative unlike the other two

Newt is unelectable. He’d actually make a pretty good president probably, but a real conservative can’t win an election now. I like Guliani too for president but I’m not sure how his leaving his wife for his mistress back in 2000 is going to work for him, maybe his great record in office will be enough to make people forget about that.

Newt Gingrich is reportedly considering a run, but I agree with Quinney and seriously doubt he’d be electable. I’m quite sure most voters can forgive Giuliani his marital indescretions (like it’s any of their damned business); I’m more worried that his support for gun control will hurt him in the primaries. The NRA are a huge lobby group and will reject him purely on his approach to firearms issues regardless of anything else, good or bad, that the guy has done. I’d hate to see McCain gain a pass just because he won’t take away people’s guns.

Yes the NRA are massive but McCain is no better on gun control than Guliani I don’t think. Check out this website: http://www.ontheissues.org/Domestic/John_McCain_Gun_Control.htm

Thanks guys. I think what will be important will be what Giuliani does in the coming months. We still don’t know what he believes about a lot of key issues (though quite a bit of what I’ve read from him would fall under a pro-freedom kind of banner) - interviews, manifestos and speeches will be important to listen to as time goes on. I believe he’ll turn out to be the best choice for most Americans as time goes on. The most likely scenario, as I see it, is that Giuliani will go up against Hilary Clinton for the general election. If that’s the case, Giuliani will split the New York vote, split the ‘liberals who dislike Hilary’ vote and take every moderate with him, since Hilary is still regarded as ‘too far Left’ for most.

For my money, I think Giuliani wouldn’t make a bad president, though I’m liberal I’m not sure I’d vote for Hilary.

Greg- That’s good news. It means more liberals are thinking like you and would reject that awful woman for the presidency.

They are all a bunch of charlatans. I can’t see how a libertarian like you could endorse Giuliani or anyone else who may be in the running. They are the antithesis of what we should be doing.

It’s because he’s not a real libertarian.
