Hydrogenated fats replace the fat in the brain. This is viewed as hindering cognitive function. Cutting these trans fats from the diet and ingesting fat of the omega 3 variety, from oily fish or flax seeds, keeps cognitive function operating at the level it is supposed to. The only reaon they use hydrogenated fat is for stability and shelf life. Free to choose to be dumb and eat trans fats. Not me daddio.

What the hell? John made one comment at the beginning to set up the post, not even making a point from it, and that's all you can criticize him on?

Jon I think John's comments at the beginning were somewhat tongue-in-cheek, and the rest of this piece was dedicated to discussing why transfat should not be banned. It's kind of nitpicking. But at the same time the reasons KFC and McDonald's and such have not moved to no transfat way before now is that they wanted to ensure the taste would be up to snuff.

OK, I'm no expert on this, but from what I have read I think you may be off the mark on this one. (admittedly, I think you're off the mark on most things, but anyway...)

Aren't the main benefits of trans-fats 1 - cost and 2 - preservative qualities? And nothing to do with taste, being almost universally regarded as tasting worse than the alternatives?

I stand to be corrected on this (and it doesn't affect your agrument about whether businesses should be allowed to use them and consukers to buy them) but isn't this a pretty fundamental oversight?

Thanks guys for your comments. And I appreciate the vote of confidence in the original style and topical content of this blog, though I'm not sure we've significantly departed from that, even in recent weeks! Stephen Graham is busy being a new dad, and he usually brings a fairly 'original' libertarian approach to his writing... some of which may have been missing since his last post.

RubyRGFJ- That is not the real question relating to this discussion. The real question is: Is your life yours to live as you see fit or the government's to live for you?

The real question is whether or not your health is important enough to you to take seriously enough to put into law. Period. If not then go ahead and talk about it the way you have. If it is, then you'll support any measure that will help, including this one.

Things sure are quiet this week, but I really enjoyed this article John and agree with H Taggart that it is exactly the reason I came to this blog in the first place. It is unbelievable that New York feels that they have the right to tell their citizens how to cook their food. Maybe as long as there are blogs like this they will be just one step further from doing it nationwide.

I'm not surprised that the communists in New York would propose such a ban to take away any remnant of individual liberty from New Yorkers. The people of New York can't own or carry firearms to protect themselves and now they soon may not be able to eat what they want because the nanny state says so.
If I were the mayor of New York, I would fire the Health Board director, and replace him with a man who didn't have a communist agenda.
