Actually Frank I do happen to be "afflicted" in those areas! Including the bad eyesight, by the way. All my life I have had the jealousy of other women to deal with and instead of going and excelling in areas of their lives that they are good at, they chose to sit and be angry at me that they weren't born with certain genetic traits that would give an advantage in certain aspects of life. We all have our own lives to lead, so go and give your best punch instead of sit and be mad.

Jennifer- I agree. Although it's possible that some people can have a harder time with this than others, all sensible people surely realise that they can't blame anyone but themselves for their obesity. And there's something else that hasn't been mentioned here: the fact that in previous ages, if you were overweight, it meant you could afford to eat well, and you were esteemed well because of it. That's a testament to how far we've come as a society, that obesity is even a problem now. And there are those who have no such problem with the fact that they are overweight: they enjoy food and enjoy life rather than eat stuff they hate all the time. It's a choice, they recognise that, and I've met several people who are fully prepared to accept the consequences.

Don't make obesity a societal issue: if it's an issue at all, then it's an individual issue that, unless your own weight concerns you, shouldn't be of any relevance to you or anyone else.

I think genetics are a part of it. I have weighed 110 pounds since I was 16 years old (I'm now 32) and no matter what I eat I can't put on weight. Yet my boyfriend needs to watch what he eats carefully otherwise he'd be 280 before you can say DIET. But basically you're right, it's the individual who is responsible for their own weight, regardless of genetic advantages or otherwise. By the way, the same applies for good looks, big boobs, nice legs, bad eyesight, whatever. It's ludicrous to think that we're all somehow the same, or that we need protecting or helping out by the state.

Greg: People are fat because they love eating, and love eating certain things. It's not to do with them being manipulated by adverising. It's not to do with their genetics. It's not to do with the lack of healthy food around. It's to do with stuffing their faces. I'm no Slim Jim myself, but I'm honest enough to admit that every pound of excess weight on me is there because of eating too much.

SG

Greg- Welcome back. Stephen is making the claim here, perhaps by overstating the ease with which someone can stop overfeeding themselves if they've been in a habit of doing so, that it is, practically, a case of merely not buying the next burger or downing the next packet of chips. And overstating isn't a bad thing here, considering the towering irresponsibility that we're being encouraged to have toward ourselves these days almost everywhere you look: this blog stands among the minority that call for self-government and self-liability.

That is not to say that, under a libertarian system of government, people wouldn't be fat anymore. People would still make bad decisions: but with self-government comes self-liability, and the difference is that it would be entirely, painfully obvious who was to blame for their own obesity.

Yes, this ranks right up there with your addiction post, where you denied the addictive property of nicotine. Do you really think if it were this easy people would be fat at all? Isn't it better to be thin? The mere fact that there are obese people out there, in droves, is testament to the fact that we have a problem that won't be cured by the insulting suggestions you make here.
