Exactly Jeff, it ultimately boils down to personal responsibility, which is the essense of libertarianism.

SG

I agree with this! There are too many people sitting around on welfare claiming that they have a bad back or something gambling away their welfare money and blaming everybody but themselves! I this its time that they realized they are just weak willed as you said!

Chemistry you say...It wasn't my strong point, despite studying it for a time at university.

Anyhow, I'm fully aware of chemicals which create cravings. My point is that none of these cravings are utterly determinate. And in the case of smoking addiction the word "disease" is being used a bit loosely. You use the phrase "CAN'T stop smoking" [emphasis mine] and seem to wholly blame the chemicals. The fact of the matter is that they CAN stop. Why else do 1000's quit each day? The one's who can't stop deep down don't want to. If you really want to stop you will. Even products marketed to help people stop smoking emphasise the need for will power - in others words, emphasising the fact that people must WANT to stop. When they do, they will. I've never met a person who genuinely wanted to stop who couldn't.

The human spirit is a fairly robust thing. Perhaps you should start believing in it.

SG

I think you will find that some addictions are a serious disease. Are you so blind to pure chemistry that you can't understand that it isn't as simple as just "you don't light a cigarette", there are hugely addictive chemicals in the nicotine found in cigarettes and that is why people can't stop smoking? Like the problems I had with what John Wright was saying with climate change, you are ignorant of science and ignorant of the expert prognosis. If you want people to view your politics as beyond contempt then you are going the right way about it.

Hi S...

I haven't heard anything about the comment feature...sometimes blogger is a bit slow so it takes a while for a comment to appear.

I agree with your comments about tax dollars...no matter how much politicians and governments go on about "addictions" and about how bad this or that is for society or for an individual's health they realise that activities such as smoking, drinking and gambling raise loads of money for the government's coffers. Over here in Britain a government that waxes lyrical about "problem gamblers" is introducing legislation for the setting up of several "super casinos." They see the financial benefits of it.

Some trouble with comments at the moment? I couldn't post one for a while. Here in the States there are several proposals aimed at internet gambling sites like internet poker. I couldn't agree more that it is none of their business but I'm convinced that their main reason is the tax dollars that will come from regulating it, all of the internet. It's a disgrace.
