The crazy thing is that most people accept some limitations to government anyway, like they don't think they should be taxed at 95%. What happens when you ask them, why would that be wrong? I would think they should have to answer that some governmnt limitations are necessary, in that case we only have to argue on a matter of degree.

Yup...tell me about it. Most of the arguments or discussions I've had about libertarianism haved boiled down to that point, with my opponent asking: "if you believe in democracy then why shouldn't the government do what the majority of the people want?" I don't blame people for this since it is a fairly obvious question and I was blind to the answer myself for a long time. Upon hearing the traditional libertarian answer to this question, (in terms of rights and the limits of democracy), some people look at you with a seriously puzzled look, like you're from another planet, while for others, far fewer others, you see a little light turning on in their minds. They've woken up. Hallelujah!

I think many people feel that whatever the majority believe, that's what should prevail, a la democracy. A libertarian such as John and yourself has the difficult job of trying to convince them that such should not necessarily be the case.
