The papers today are reporting the findings of the House of Commons ‘Health Select Committee’ – and they have irritated me intensely. They were yesterday hearing ‘witnesses’ from McDonalds, Cadbury’s (chocolate), Pepsi, and Kelloggs, called in by the government. You know, Big Brother. Tut-tut, Ronald- you’ve been producing burgers again, haven’t you. Be honest! You have been providing fatty products to the masses. You’d better come in – the ‘Health Select Committee’ want to SPEAK to you.
The Times report that “MPs are worried about obesity”, and “It was suggested that hamburgers should carry health warnings”. When I read that, I wondered instantly what kind of control-freaks make up the ‘Health Select Committee’. You see, what these idiots fail to recognise is the following:
1) NOBODY appointed them judge and jury of what anyone else should eat or not eat
2) NOBODY asked them to sit around pontificating about obesity in anyone else
and most importantly,
3) In a civilised society, people are responsible for themselves and their children, NO-ONE ELSE.
Let these pillocks sit in a ‘Health Select Committee’ around the dinner table with their OWN children and talk to THEM about how fat they are getting. Let them talk to their own children about how many chocolate bars they are consuming (which people have been eating for generations without many problems by the way). I have to say I’m utterly disgusted by the impotence of these people to understand the nature of freedom and liberty and the role of government.
Only recently did a bunch of MPs rally round in a morning session to accuse Simon Cowell, Pete Waterman and their fellow Pop Idol judges of having a negative impact on young people watching when they made comments about some contestants not fitting the role of a Pop Idol due to their size or shape or look. Again, the MPs have entirely missed both the following points: a) that again it is none of their damn business and not remotely related to the role of government, and b) that Simon Cowell and Pete Waterman, both very successful record producers, are looking for people who will sell albums and be idols – THAT makes it ENTIRELY LEGITIMATE IN EVERY WAY for them to seek people who look right for the job. Its only a matter of time before the modelling agencies are called in to be scolded and a law passed preventing them discriminating against ugly people. Believe me.
It is time our politicians understood that we do not want this much government. That I am responsible for myself and that by my own virtue I will conduct myself in this world, not by the rules and standards of someone else. That means that if I want to eat burgers, at the cost of my own metabolism, or if I want to PRODUCE burgers to make a living without being forced to display damaging stickers on their boxes, every day for the rest of my troubled life, NO ‘Health Select Committee’ should be able to tell me otherwise.
The day this government realises that the better for all of us.
